Hi, I am Sanela Vellino, a PhD just like you. I got my PhD in Biomedicine in 2014 in Spain and immediately after did a Post doc in France. Already after my master in Vienna I was interested to enter the Industry, but despite hundreds of applications I had not even have one single interview. I knew I was doing something wrong but had no idea what and how to improve. I continued my career in Academia because that was all I knew how to do.
After my Post doc I created my own start-up and learned about digital marketing and Ecommerce. This experience provided me info on how Industry works. Through that experience I learned the vocabulary used in Industry, the focus, the parameters of success and I started to understand what I was doing wrong when applying for industry jobs during my academic career.
Academia and Industry do not speak the same language, do not have the same focus and same goals.
So now that I got that knowledge, I started again. Now I knew how to write the CV and what to focus on but I had no idea which jobs existed. Every place where I looked for info was so complex and overwhelming.
I wondered why learning about the job options for scientists could not be easy. Why nobody took time to simplify it.
I applied for a Scientific Content Creator because I saw this position available and based on requirements I was a perfect fit. I was beyond myself when I saw it. I wrote my CV differently now with the rules of Industry and guess what: not even a month after they called me for the interview.
I prepared for the interview by watching Youtube videos and practicing answers. I did really well during the interview: showed confidence, kept it entertaining, conversational, to the point. I was sure that I got the job so I was very surprised when they called me and told me that I was overqualified. What?!
I felt like I was underqualified and overqualified for any job in Industry.
But they also told me that they liked me so much that they want me to apply for their Field application specialist and if I pass they would open this position for me. I was so happy.
I passed that interview and have spent many years in that same company. At one point during my Career I felt the need to advance and I studied and pivoted my career to Digital product management and I am still in it. Since then I did many other interviews to master the skills of interviewing and to understand my market value.
My path was bumpy because I could not find a place where I could learn all I needed to know in an easy and straight forwarded way. Now a decade later I created that space for you so that you can have a smooth transition.
